•A psychosocial assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of a person’s physical, mental and emotional health, his/her ability to function with a community and his/her perception of themselves. It is an important part of learning about the individual to set up an action plan for the medical team.
•A very important part of the psychosocial assessment is forming a rapport with the individual. Sometimes this does not happen immediately. The psychosocial assessment asks questions, and the individual is expected to answer them truthfully. Questions vary according to the individual and the problems they are facing at the time. The answers are used to create a treatment plan for the individual. This assessment can be performed every few weeks to determine progress. Strengths and weaknesses are all taken into consideration, along with personality, likes and dislikes, temperament, etc. Gaining information about any recent social or psychological factors that may have affected the individual helps the counselor understand how the treatment plan will need to be created to help. The assessment also takes into consideration the individual’s current and previous lifestyle, along with their diet, addictions and relationships. Some clients are hesitant to provide information because they are uncertain how it will affect them. A biopsychosocial assessment determines the social functioning abilities of individuals by assessing biological, psychological and social factors. This makes it easier to understand the issues the individual is facing rather than just biological factors alone.
